One of us would alert the others that they were going to fake an emergency, and then we would, just to test our reaction times.
It was completely silly and really achieved nothing, but it was fun.
and that's why I didn't take it entirely seriously when I got Mike's email to the group.
Mike was the elected head of this neighborhood watch, and he was a bit of a joker.
He was a serious, dependable guy when it came to it, but he was always down for a laugh.
His email read like he'd either forgotten to warn us that this was a test, or that he figured it was so silly he didn't even need to warn us.
Now, I've still got the email archived in my old Hotmail account, and here I'll just read it for you.
I've tried to fix its many typos, but Mike wasn't the best at grammar.
It read as follows.
Guys, there's been a sighting of something effing weird in the neighborhood.
I heard from Mrs. O'Bannon and Ms.
Perks via two separate emails that they'd seen an old, withered, dirty-looking homeless guy walking down the middle of the road.
Now, okay, we don't judge.
Homeless people are allowed to cut through our area.
That wasn't the issue, though.
The guy was walking a pet on a leash, a pet alligator, according to Mrs. O'Bannon, and a crocodile, according to Ms.
Perks.
Now, they're both willing to admit that as old ladies, they don't have the best eyesight, but they are certain that this is what they saw.
Now, as you all know, we live absolutely nowhere near alligator country.
And I believe crocodiles only live maybe somewhere south of Florida when it comes to mainland America.
