It took a couple of days for word to spread across county lines, but when it did, someone from Alston drove over to see it for themselves.
Lo and behold, the cops were all still there, stripped to the waist with shovels and pickaxes, shoveling their way through mountains of dirt.
They were looking for something alright, and by that stage, it had to be Moe and Larry's bodies.
But since they refused to make any announcements regarding what they were doing, there was an uproar back home in Bellington.
Folks wanted to know what the hell they were doing out there, digging up some hog farm, or more specifically, what kind of tip-off they'd received that led them to put all that work into digging the place up.
It was radio silence for weeks on end, and then when the Barber County Sheriff finally told folks what he was doing, they were even less happy than before.
He said it was some kind of anonymous tip-off and that the whole dig had amounted to nothing, but people didn't believe a word of it.
They didn't believe that they'd dig up a whole farm based on nothing but a tip.
But the cops wouldn't budge.
They said that there was nothing more to be done regarding that avenue of investigation, and there'd be more updates as and when they rolled in.
But there were no updates, there was no news, and neither Moe nor Larry, bodies or otherwise, were ever found.
The mystery of what happened to those two hunters stayed hanging over Bellington for as long as I lived there, and since I don't imagine people have forgotten about them, I don't imagine that dark cloud's about to disappear anytime soon.
Do you like fire, Joel?
I used to.
I used to enjoy bonfires and campfires.
I used to love staring into the flames and imagining I could see all kinds of magical things in them.
Now, fire just fills me with fear.
Not just because of one event, but because of two.
They occurred a few months apart, but they are almost certainly linked.
The first event happened when I was walking home from town one day.
