I live within walking distance of the shopping district, yay for the UK and its tiny landmass, so walking into town was a weekly trip for me.
I live in a no-through terrace street with footpaths on one end, one leads from the town slash train station and the other leads to the suburbs and further out of town.
I was walking down the footpath leading to my street when I noticed a group of three very drunk, very loud people just ahead of me.
Two men and a woman.
I could hear them over the sounds of Rammstein playing through my headphones, but I shut off my iPhone so I could hear them clearer.
They were some of the most vulgar, unpleasant people I have ever had the misfortune to follow, and I prayed that they didn't stop, turn around, and see me.
There were clearly 50,000 sheets to the wind and from the sounds of their jabbering, they were looking for a fight with someone, anyone probably.
Thankfully, they were too focused on heading to wherever to stop and turn around.
As I reached the turning into my street, they crossed over to the next footpath.
I watched with disgust as one of them tossed a cigarette butt into the hedge of my neighbor at the end of the street.
As soon as I got home and unpacked my shopping, I headed upstairs and checked out the window.
I was a little concerned about the discarded cigarette butt because it was a dry summer and the hedge had started turning brown and dry.
And before I even had a chance to scope out the end of the street, I knew something was up.
It looked like it was snowing.
In August.
And I quickly realized that ash was blowing past my window.
I quickly looked out to the right and saw that flames were licking up my neighbor's hedge.
I grabbed my phone and called a couple of neighbors, ones that I knew were members of the neighborhood watch, and then I immediately ran outside.
Before I even had a chance to get halfway down the street, the entire hedge, and I'm talking an extremely large, deciduous hedge here, had caught fully ablaze.
Other neighbors started emerging from their houses and we felt helpless as we realized that there was pretty much no way to get any kind of water towards the hedge.
