At first I was thinking Mark was a closet case, that he was actually conducting an extramarital affair with another man.
I wasn't excited about walking up on him and another woman, and without trying to sound like I hate gays, I don't.
I was even less excited about the idea of walking up on him and another dude.
But since I had to confirm that he was cheating and not just report back on where he was going, I had no choice.
And so I watched Mark and his buddy for a few minutes while they did nothing but talk, before they suddenly walked over to the other guy's trunk and he opened it up.
I got the sinking feeling, thinking it was a another dud and all Mark was there to do was buy a second hand pair of jumper cables or something.
So imagine my surprise when he and his buddi slid a couple of ski masks over their heads before the buddy took what looked like a couple of hammers or hatchets from the trunk and handed one to Mark.
I didn't have any kind of camera, let alone one with any night vision capabilities, so there was no recording either of them as they walked off into the trees.
And before anyone reading this starts thinking, why not just use your phone?
Well, that wasn't an option.
It was almost pitch black and the light coming from inside the open car would have done nothing but silhouette them if I tried to take a picture without a flash.
I could barely see what they were holding in their hands, and that's why I said either hammers or hatchets.
And then after Mark's buddy locked up his car and the dome light went off, there was no seeing them at all.
So while I had a good idea that they were up to no good, I needed to follow if I wanted to know what it was, but you can bet your ass that I kept my distance.
I must have given it maybe ten to fifteen seconds, and then I crossed the road, past Mark and his buddy's car, and then followed them off into the darkness.
The trees were fairly spaced out and there was just enough moonlight for us to not need any flashlights, which was good, but also bad because it meant at some points I had to tail mark in the company by sound alone.
They were keeping their voices down, but not whispering or anything like that.
And their footsteps were so loud that I could keep an easy track of them.
But then after only a few minutes of walking, they stopped, exchanged a few even quieter words, and then went silent altogether as they started creeping through the darkness.
I realized then that I could see the glow of a campfire in the distance, and that Mark and his buddy were headed right for it.
