Now, Josh started talking about how gutting turkeys made him wish that we stuck to fishing and how it's easier to gut certain kinds of fish than it is to get the wrapper off a Slim Jim.
Now that part made me laugh, and I turned to ask him what in the hell kind of Slim Jims he's been eating, but I didn't get a chance to get the words out, because before I even opened my mouth, a bullet flew over our heads, and a shot rang out.
Now I think it was a tree that stopped the bullet, but I can't be certain.
All I heard was this chunk sort of sound as it landed somewhere behind us.
and both me and Josh just froze up for a second.
And while I can't tell you what he was thinking at that moment, I couldn't imagine why anyone might shoot at us, so I assumed it was an accident of some kind.
Now we were both crouched still as I yelled out something, what the hell?
Hey dumbass, watch your aim!
I didn't really figure it was just some idiot greenhorn who couldn't tell a turkey call from the goddamn echo of one, and I expected to hear an apology, but instead, we got nothing.
No answer at all.
Just the wind rustling dead leaves.
And then suddenly, another crack split the air and a second bullet hit even closer than the first.
When it kicked up a clump of dirt no more than three feet away from Josh's boot, we both screamed and ran for cover behind the truck.
For a second I thought I could run for my gun, which by then was leaning up against a log nearby.
but I was also pretty sure grabbing it meant giving whoever was out there a very clear shot of me, so I realized pretty quickly that we had no choice but to stay crouched and hope the shooter didn't have an angle on us.
Joss kept trying to figure out where it was coming from, but it only took a couple of seconds for us to figure out that, at the very least, he wasn't behind us.
He was somewhere out there in front of us and on the other side of that truck.
Now the best we could do was look out into the truck's side mirror and hope that we could catch a muzzle flash or something should the shooter choose to fire again.
Josh leaned down at one point too, trying to peek out under the truck, but I told him to stop being so dumb before he got his freaking head shot off.
He then tried reaching for his gun, and I swear I thought I was about to watch him take a bullet right then and there, but he managed to reach and grab it without the shooter firing a third time.
