And that's what gave us hope that whoever had fired had just simply ran off, so after a couple more minutes of waiting there, we decided to make a break for it.
We counted off a quiet three, then scrambled up and dived into the truck, leaving those half-dressed turkeys laying there as we sped off as fast as we could.
I didn't even think about going for my gun, not while Josh had his.
And then while leaning over in the seat so as not to expose myself through the windshield, I started up the truck's engine, and off we went with the wheels spinning and not even bothering to close the doors.
I kept waiting for a shot to shatter the windshield or ping off the tailgate.
but there was nothing but the sound of my engine as we hauled ass down that dirt road.
We didn't slow down until we hit the highway, but even then, it took another couple of miles before our hearts stopped pounding like they were fixing to explode, and we drove right over to the county sheriff's office, so wired on adrenaline and how surreal it all was that we forgot to wash the blood off of our hands.
One of the deputies later joked that he thought we'd walk in to confess a murder and hadn't ever been so relieved in his life when we said it was turkey blood and he saw the little white feathers caked in the mud on our boots.
Now once we got as clean as we could in the department bathroom, we both sat down with the deputy I mentioned and walked him through the whole insane ordeal.
It felt like talking about a dream, like it all happened so fast and it made such little sense that describing it all to that deputy felt almost like I was talking about someone else.
The deputy took our statements, asked us a bunch of questions, mainly on the location of where it all happened.
And that's when leaving the turkeys behind became a good thing because if the cops found two half-dressed turkeys, then they'd had our spot.
The deputy told us that they'd send a patrol out to check, but with it being hunting season, he was betting on it being anything from a stray bullet to some fool playing games.
And to us, it felt way more personal than that.
But we also figured that the sheriff's department would do a better job figuring it all out than we ever could.
And I guess they did exactly that too, as it took them a couple of years.
After we gave our statements, Josh and I grabbed some coffee at a gas station, and he talked me out of going back to where he'd been shot at so I could retrieve my shotgun.
Although if I had chosen to go back, I'd have found what the deputies did a couple of days later, which was two half-dressed turkeys, but no shotgun.
And that's what was real creepy, thinking whoever shot at us hadn't run off or run out of ammunition or whatever.
They took two shots, then watched us drive off, all scared before walking up on where we'd been and stealing my gun.
