And the whole thing sure did ruin a good hunt, that's for damn sure, and my mother ended up buying a store-bought turkey which tasted like cardboard compared to what we could have had.
Now, it felt like we'd lost something, something even bigger than those turkeys and that shotgun.
We just never realized how lucky we'd really been until about three years later.
So, during the summer of 1993, a man named Thomas Dillon was convicted of five murders, all of which took place in eastern and southern Ohio.
As you can imagine, it was huge news, but it wasn't the number of bodies or even where they killed which really got mine and Josh's attention.
It was how this guy killed his victims.
Because he didn't stab them or bludgeon them to death, he shot them instead.
But he did it from a distance and with a long rifle, like he was hunting people.
I heard it from Josh before I put it together myself and when he called, it was the only time in my life where I genuinely felt my legs turn to jelly.
I remember sitting back down on the couch with the phone in my hands thinking, holy crap, we got shot at by a serial killer and we could have been two of his victims.
Again, we didn't know how lucky we really were because I think maybe four or five days later after our hunting trip, Tom Dillon killed a kid just a few years younger than us in almost the exact same spot.
Now, he didn't just destroy lives by killing people either, and there's no way that he killed just five.
In fact, there was such a strong evidence that Dylan had killed two hunters in Michigan in the same year that we got shot at, that another person falsely accused of killing them was let out of jail after spending 18 years in a cell.
Now, that'll never fail to be crazy to me how this guy managed to ruin the lives of people he'd never even met.
and how by some miracle, I narrowly avoided being one of his victims.
