No harm done, right?
Well, the shopping cart contained a full-sized coffin.
And she wasn't just walking down the street once.
She was walking down the street, disappearing for a while, and then walking back the way she came.
One of the neighbors, a night owl guy that I knew, his name was James, decided to follow her at a distance.
He discovered that she had been walking in a circle around a few blocks and then turning around at a certain point and repeating the circuit in reverse.
Everyone's posts were rife with speculation.
Why was she carting a coffin around?
Was that even legal?
Apparently it looked like a fairly bad or dirty coffin, and some of the theories were wild.
Now it took me, a 19-year-old girl, to provide a grounded suggestion.
It was a Halloween prop.
It was the start of October, so it wasn't out of the ordinary.
James immediately shot my idea down.
I hadn't seen her.
Why would this extremely elderly lady be walking a circuit around the block with a spirit Halloween coffin in a shopping cart?
That's a good point, James, but had he considered dementia?
Maybe the old lady lived on the next street over and she was suffering from sundown syndrome, which causes dementia sufferers to start acting weird right after nightfall.
It was as good an explanation as any.
But whatever.
