That prompted a flash of recognition in his eyes, but still he didn't say anything, and he waited until I'd finished a short explanation on why I was looking for him before asking.

No, I had already touched on the fact that I was just a PI, but after feeling somewhat taken aback by that question, I reiterated that I was not there in a law enforcement capacity.
Joe listened, but there wasn't the same flash of recognition.
He just stared at me, almost like he wasn't really listening anymore.
It was then that I fulfilled his brother's request that I invite him to make a phone call just so he could hear his voice as a kind of proof of life.
