But Joe didn't seem too excited on that idea at all.
He repeated the question back to me, asking if I wanted him to go with him.
And that's what I mean when I say it was almost like he wasn't listening and that his mind must have been elsewhere.
He was only giving me half of his attention, and he made that evident by looking around as if I might have backup or something close by.
I repeated that yes, I wanted him to come with me at the request of his brother, but seeing as I wasn't a cop or agent or anything, he could just simply refuse and walk away.
But I didn't get past the cop part because as soon as I said it, Joe pulled a gun.
And fired at me three times.
I wasn't defenseless.
I had a concealed carry permit for the state of Colorado and when Joe reached like he did, I knew he was going for a gun.
And so I went for mine too.
Sadly, he beat me to it.
On account of him having the jump on me, though, not because of my age, and I was still fast enough to put one of my three shots into him, but he put two of his own into me.
The first shot caught me as I tried to twist away from him, lodging its way against the bone in one of my arms.
If it had punctured through it might have got my lungs or some of the larger blood vessels in my chest, which would have been really bad news for me.
The second shot hit me in the thigh just above the knee, missing my femur and femoral artery by the width of a finger.
I went down hard as Joe turned and ran.
And that's when I fired my last shot.
The one that hit him.
But then I knew that I had to check my own wounds as just seconds mean life and death if you have an arterial bleed.
Now, luckily I didn't seem to have one.
