like uh present day what's the next step that we could take like what's the like um what are like initiatives that we could try right now that could give us like better clarity and this isn't like super answer your question from before of like which it is and that's because i also feel quite stuck on like i that it just like depends on so many different things it's like hard hard for me to say like which i feel like more bullish on what about your fourth uh fourth sort of risk area that you're concerned about
Yeah, we talked a bit about the power of concentration.
So like gradualist empowerment is about people kind of like not feeling like they can
they like meaningfully contribute to society or like have meaningful meaning to their lives, like at all.
And then the power concentration aspect of it is like, um, people could be using these AI systems to try to like, uh, gain more power for themselves.
And we see this in the use of AI in like military and warfare, but also in like, um, trying in like misinformation, uh, campaigns or trying to like disrupt elections, um, where, um,
if a lot of the basis of power is democracy, if you kind of disrupt people's ability to make informed decisions based off of evidence or like based informed decisions, I suppose, on what they want and you kind of distort their vision of reality, then that kind of breaks the foundation of like what a democracy is.
And therefore, like,
the kind of like basic foundation where most institutions have their power from, which is like the trust of the people and the vote of the people will fall apart.
And this will lead to a lot more just like instability.
And with warfare, it's just like, if one country is way better military than the other, that's kind of like game over for a smaller country and you kind of have to give in.
And this is just like with people.
And you can think of this as like AI systems as well.
Like if you were to concentrate power into an AI system, and if you were wrong, that these AI systems actually...
You know, like, do things that we believe are, like, good for us and instead, like, decide, you know, maybe it's better if people no longer exist on Earth and are able to enact that kind of plan because we were not careful.
That could also be quite bad.
So these...
frontier-era companies, so companies who are building these extremely powerful models, when you work inside of them, some of the levers that you can pull is that you have access to these models, and so perhaps you'd be able to run different kinds of experiments because you have direct access.
You could potentially have some amount of sway with what kinds of features go into the model, like what kinds of safety precautions or brick-glass measures that you have
But a lot of these companies are limited by also...
