So it's a VAR overreach, I think.

If that incident in isolation is called a foul immediately, I'm not sure there would be too many complaints because he does tread on his foot.

There's some normal contact.

But it's also inconsistent with the way that most of this tournament has been officiated, where referees have let more go.

And I think it was Pierluigi Colina confirmed that they've been instructed to allow normal football contact in these games.

So it does feel like there was VAR overreach.

And the problem when you do that...

and this goes back to the wider context of this perception of FIFA being prepared to put their thumb on the scale for certain things, to get Ronaldo into the tournament, to maybe get Follering Balogun available when he's suspended, is that it just feeds the conspiratorial mindset that is always going to be there in knockout football.

And when VAR is there and these decisions are still made, then it only increases the level of anger.
