He is paying himself.
He's protecting his allies.
He's protecting his family members.
And when you pair this with the pardons, it really sends such a strong message to people who are on the president's team that they can do whatever they want.
It tells them there are no consequences.
You can expect that if you cross legal lines in support of Donald Trump,
you will be protected with a pardon and you might even get paid for your troubles through a sham settlement fund out of other people's money.
This settlement agreement is just so outlandish and so outside the norm for this type of legal document and this type of legal arrangement that I am sure there will be litigation to try to stop its enforcement.
The question is, who can bring that litigation?
That's where we run into this legal doctrine called taxpayer standing.
The Supreme Court many years ago made it very difficult for taxpayers to sue over the misuse of their tax dollars.
So our ability as citizens to bring a lawsuit is limited.
You have to generally find someone who has been specifically harmed by a government action who can bring
That lawsuit.
I am sure there are lots of smart lawyers out there who are working on legal strategies, but really the people who should step up are Congress.
What this is, is an end run around Congress's constitutional power to appropriate money.
The Constitution makes Congress the only branch of government that has the authority to properly establish this type of settlement fund, which really has nothing to do with the lawsuit that Donald Trump brought.
That was just a pretext.
The settlement fund is something that could only lawfully be created by Congress under the Constitution.
They should be suing the president and the Justice Department for infringing on their constitutional authority.
