so that that said states can still opt out which what they if under this rule they have to be in the same time zone there's a few other stipulations but if you really hate this idea your state can't opt out would it be that indiana was right all the wrong or wrong or right all along it depends on what you think is important arizona's arizona hawaii and hawaii the the uh territories none of them observe it because they're near the equator and it doesn't really matter it's just useless
But it does matter significantly, especially for the groups that are the two corners of the time zones, which we're going to talk about.
The time zones themselves are an interesting little tidbit.
So where did these come from?
To weigh the pros and cons, we need to have a firm understanding of those time zones themselves, because the impact of this proposal is drastically different if you live, say, in the northeast corner, or I'm sorry, the northwest corner of North Dakota, which is the top northwest corner of
of the central time zone, or Panama City, which is the far southeast corner of the central time zone.
So these time zones came originally from the astronomical societies.
Basically, they wanted 24 worldwide meridians, which is 15 degrees apart, and that would collapse all these different railroad times into four time zones across the U.S., eastern, central, and mountain Pacific.
And every time zone is built around the central line of longitude where the clock is supposed to match.
Noon would line up with that meridian perfectly.
And so that's why it's in the middle of these time zones.
That's great.
So instead of, you know, like when you, the time zone line that you're basing it off isn't the split in between, you know, Alabama and Georgia or wherever your split is.
It's the center of that generally.
Yeah.
The farther east you go from that meridian, so in this case, let's take the center of the country and you're going towards the edge of North Dakota, the further east you go, the earlier the sun runs against your clock.
The farther west you go, so towards Florida, the later it runs against your clock.
