They applaud him, he applauds them.

So that was an incredibly moving moment.

And I think for survivors, the emotion in his apology did so much healing, so much, many of them said, to take shame away.

But then as time went on, where was the apology from the church, the official apology?

There were, you know, some orders released statements saying,

we're very sorry that you were hurt or have bad memories of time in our care.

So that's very, I'm sorry that you're upset.

And even the use of word care there.

Yeah, yeah.

Well, I'd read the report at the time and when I knew I was going to set out on this project, I'd read it again and

So that was several years ago.

It's full of facts and figures.

There's lots of useful archival information in there.

So I don't want to write it off completely, but the way in which it frames, presents,

what happened in the laundries is so bureaucratic, so flat.

And, you know, I was thinking if this was a work of fiction, this would feel like the author's hand too heavily playing on the narrative.

But when I found out that Martin McAleese, because we all know him as Mary McAleese's husband, when I found out Martin McAleese had first been a dentist and then became an accountant, I was like, you can't make this up.

They deal in black and white things.

You know, that's both of those jobs.

And that's the same kind of logic and order that was brought to this report.
