Well, the other thing, you know, if you think about, there's a chapter in the book about the 1920s and 30s, about the culture and the politics of,
that out of which this system emerged and I had thought you know it was all about church and state sort of at the moment of independence sort of took over and what I found was was much more fraught across the 20s and really it was a kind of proto culture war and what I came to realize was you know I took the culture wars almost as like it's a thing that's just happening all the time it's always ongoing now it's like a permanent part of my the politics of my era
And what I came to realise from this was culture wars can be won and culture wars can be lost and sometimes with the most tragic consequences.
And the Magdalene laundries are an example of one of those extreme and tragic consequences.
And if you believe in liberal, progressive, inclusive, tolerant societies, then actually this is in some ways a warning call that it's worth fighting for.

Quite far.
And I guess that's the idea we can all, that's the idea of the fallen, isn't it?
