And then one woman in the book
who was a woman, she was a girl, she was 18 at the time.
She said she also didn't ask any questions when she arrived and it was only when they cut off her hair and she'd spent ages growing down her hair after leaving the industrial school and she loved it.
And then she just saw her hair drop to the ground and then she said she spoke for the first time, started sobbing and said...
why are you cutting my hair?
And they said, you have to have your hair short here.
And she said, but where is hair?
And that bewilderment is really, you know, continues on into the first days and weeks at the laundry.
So their hair would be cut off and then they really were put straight to work.
But before that, their name was taken.
So they would pick a new name for them.
They were never to mention their
their own name.
They were told not to mention where they were from.
They were not to mention anything about their life before the laundry.
Then they were brought straight down and put to work.
When we think about the laundry and actually when we see it in films as well, it's like a little, you know, it's like a little cottage industry and everyone's, you know, it's in one room.
These are vast complexes with purpose built rooms organized for the efficient order of, you know, the laundry labor.
So there was the packing room, the sorting room, the ironing room, and then the wet, what they described as the wet room.
That's where the actual washing happened.
