I actually love the low maintenance living, but it's somehow seen as less than.

It's somehow seen that if you live in an apartment, particularly heaven forbid you live in an apartment with a family, that that is somehow second best and that we should all aspire to the lawn.

And for some people, that is a great aspiration.

I'm not suggesting that it shouldn't be, but it's more that that's the dominant narrative that I think we really need to question.

Yeah, I think about it for myself that when I did have a house and look, I appreciate this, you know, and perhaps of the age where I was able to buy with a property market wasn't so astronomical.

But when we had a house, it was a fixer-upper.

It was just chores.

And some people love it.

So if you're someone who loves maintenance, who loves gardening...

Yeah, then it's perfect, right?

It's part of your project and your pride and you're working on this place that you own.

But if you're busy and stressed and you don't like painting and you don't like mowing lawns, then the idea of spending all of your free time doing that is stressful.

My experience is that I didn't like spending, you know, after a huge week coming home and needing to fix up the backyard as now I come home and there's literally nothing that needs to be done to my house.

And I find that quite a relief, actually.

So I would say if we look 10, 20 years ago, the first home pathway, you know, we've always had to make some level of trade-offs.

The first home pathway might be that you bought an older house that needed some work but still in a fairly good suburb.

And so then over 20 years you would gradually renovate it and then it's probably worth a lot and you've done quite well.

Now that's a great story for that time.

And if you can afford it today, it might still be a good story for you.

But for many people, even buying a fixer-upper in the right kind of suburbs is still going to be really out of reach.
