Annual inflation slowed to 4.2% in April after reaching a three-year high of 4.6% in March, according to new data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Forecasters had been expecting prices to rise by 4.4% over the 12 months to April.
but attributed the lower-than-expected figure, in part, to the government's fuel excise cut.
