I remember when I was 12 and I was in Sydney for, I was playing for Queensland in the under 12 National School Boys Carnival in rugby league.
And I remember I was down there with my parents.
And my parents obviously always knew I read.
I read at home.
That was where I read.
So my family knew and nobody else.
And I remember before a game, I was sitting there reading my book.
And then my parents were like, okay, Luke, come on.
We've got to go to the game.
You can read your book at the grounds.
And I was like, no way.
Like I'm 12 and I was like, there's absolutely no way I'm taking my book to the grounds.
And I had to leave my book at home.
And I remember thinking to myself, like, all I want to do, like, I don't want to go and play footy.
All I want to do is finish that book.
And so, yeah, so my shame was always with books and it was just the social shame, the fear that I had always.
of being judged, of being ridiculed for being a book lover, for being a nerd, for loving that, loving reading because it was never a part.
And I think, and still to this day, male culture is, we have a very blokey male culture in Australia and it's a very intellectual culture.
And it was always seen, reading and books were always seen as a very feminine or womanly thing
to do a woman, the undertaking, you know, to men don't read and men especially do not read fantasy, you know?
