Steve, how much of that perception that he has of himself has been enabled by external voices?
I'm thinking particularly about his parents and perhaps the ways in which they have tried to also rationalise his behaviours and explain away the crimes.
You know, it's easier to throw stones than look at yourself.
And I think in a lot of the s stories that we've worked on over the years, we've seen that time and time again, particularly with parents.
I can think of Gabby Bettito and Brian Laundry, and how the Laundry parents harbored their son for a period of time and then wrote him a burn after reading letter where they wax poetic about how great he was.
And the Idaho murders with Brian Koberger and his parents.
still writing to him in prison and not apologizing for his crimes publicly.
You wanna create that degree of separation for yourself, I guess, psychologically.
And I don't think parents want to admit fault.

We know that in the the weeks and months before her murder that Shannon was fighting to stay in her marriage, she would confide in friends often about how she felt that Chris was being distant from her, was was refusing her intimacy, was changing fundamentally as a person into somebody that she no longer recognized.
And during those confessionals over those periods of months and weeks, that all culminated to the day of the murders when Shannon's friends told police from the jump, if you find where his car went this morning, you'll find them.
They knew something that morning was wrong.
And it's credit to them that this case was actually wrapped up as quickly as it was, because they intervened very, very quickly to bring attention to Chris and to
dispel the narrative that he was spinning that perhaps they'd just run off.
And uh there was an interesting and sad detail that was recently came to light in in our reporting was that shortly before her death, uh Shannon had been reading a book called Hold Me Tight.
It's essentially a a marriage self-help book for couples.
