And he was very kind to me, and he said a number of years ago, he goes, make sure that the bare minimum, you try to at least get 500 words out every day.
If you get to 1,000, that's great.
But if you have 500 good words in a day, then you've done something really special.
It's very difficult.
And for me, having come from television, the last time I had really written at length was when I was a history major at Boston College.
And so I realized, especially in the earlier writing, it does read like an analytical essay.
And then as I started to go through the process and I became more comfortable writing,
I started to get more emotional and I had the stream of consciousness in the journals, but you have to professionalize it a little bit.
But I wrote out this manuscript because I wrote out every country, every journal that I had that ended up being over 300,000 words, which is much too long.
That's like having war and peace.
And it was once I did all that, I saw the through lines and what they were.
And then I worked with an editor to get it down to 80,000.
But that's – start to finish, it's a four-year process.
And why did it take so long?
It's because I didn't know what I had.
Secondly, I wanted to make sure that what I had was good.
