And so there's this attempt to cover up, to downplay, to make it sound as if it isn't as horrific as it is.
And it doesn't benefit us at all.
It does not benefit us to be, you know, Midwest nice about racism.
It doesn't benefit us at all to be accommodating, trying to bring people in who hate and who do not believe in the principles of democracy and the principles of America.
And I'm not saying this as some sort of like pretend projection of possibilities or what ifs.
We know because we've seen it, beginning with the Civil War.
Immediately after the Civil War, instead of dejecting and rejecting those who fought this country and tried to destroy this country, we quote unquote welcomed them back in, right?
Thinking that that was the best way to heal this nation.
Well, fuck, do you feel healed from that?
We're still having the exact same sort of discussions, not at the same height of violence, obviously, but the same baseline discussions about white supremacy, about equality, about justice, the same that we had after the end of the Civil War.
And the reason why is because instead of rejecting those who did not agree with the principles of America, we tried to bring them in and be nice about it.
And you can't be nice with hatred.
If hatred's coming at you with fire, you can't say, oh, burn me and then we'll be brothers.
No, you're crisp.
You're ash.
That's the dynamic that we're dealing with.
And until, you know, progressives, progressive whites, until, you know, Latinos who are trying to figure out how to find their space in this world and, you know, deciding whether or not I should try to, you know...
get cozy up next to the quote unquote, who seems to be winning right now with MAGA.
And in doing that, perhaps putting the rest of my community as some sort of mortal danger because of what we're seeing with ICE and everything.
But you're trying to find some sort of acceptance within this larger white supremacist sort of umbrella in America.
