So after the shooting, we were absolutely just a mess.
And we moved, to be honest with you.
We moved out of the neighborhood, Lincoln Park, because even though it's quote unquote one of the safest neighborhoods in Chicago, we knew it wasn't safe for me, and it definitely wasn't safe for my son.
And so we moved out of that affluent area and moved somewhere where there was more diversity and less opportunities for us to be fearful of.
So he called me right away and just he was upset.
not just because of the loss, but he also knows, Don, what it's like to be the only Black person in a group full of white people.
As I said, we were in Lincoln Park, a predominantly white neighborhood.
So it's a constant presence for him or a reminder of him of what it's like to navigate these spaces as he's moving up through his life.
And it's just,
it was hard for me to try to help him process this because i don't want him to be fearful of the world i want him to still go out there and be bold and travel by himself and go to places where black folks don't normally go i want him to do all of that but then when this story comes up you're reminded of why you're fearful when he does those things

Why do we feel we got to do that?
You know, I wrote specifically about the extra burden that Black families have when it comes to these type of stories because of the history of the criminal justice system in this country in general, but certainly in that part of the country, the South, the Deep South specifically.
You know, my folks are, my heritage is that part of Mississippi.
You know, I tell people all the time, like, we walked by the river where they pulled, you know, Edgar Mevers' body
It's really heartbreaking, Don, to think that, you know, all these decades have gone by and you hear this story about Nolan and you see the pictures with his friends and you look at the region of Mississippi where this mystery has unfolded and it's just,
it's crushing because you want to have the benefit of the doubt.
But even when I have the benefit of doubt, I feel like a fool for giving it such space because it's like, why am I giving it the benefit of doubt when you see exactly all of the pieces?
And I know we are still waiting for more information, but the one thing that I know that we're all very clear about is that if you only have one Black friend,
and a group of all white friends in Mississippi, and y'all don't make sure that that brother's all right, you weren't forming in the first place.
