It started with Beyonce.
i'm not even joking more specifically it started with beyonce's mom started with tina knows so um as you know uh you know we're both members of nabj national association of black journalists and last year uh the conference was in birmingham alabama historic place for the black community for the country really uh but not an easy place to get to and not a whole lot of fun stuff to do if you know what i mean
So we're all in Alabama, you know, for the conference, of course, and, you know, very happy to be there.
And I brought my son and all of that.
That was his first NABJ.
So it was really kind of cool.
But Tina, Ms.
Knowles, flew in to talk to us about HIV AIDS in the black community.
And I went to that conversation because I was just blown away that in the midst of this tour, you know, and she's been popping up all on the ground, you know, all over where, you know, where Bea is, you know, there's mom and, you know, everyone in the black community in particular, we're really happy to see this mother and daughter, you know, travel the world together, you know, living this dream.
And that mom left that dream to come to Birmingham, Alabama,
where a gathering of black journalists were located and said, please write about this virus, it's killing us still.
And so when she said that, I was like,
Of course, you know, and so I did.
I wrote a piece.
It's very, very detailed.
It came straight off of that conference.
And, you know, I'm very proud to say I was nominated for a GLAAD award.
You know, I was really proud of the piece, but I was also cognizant of the fact that I hadn't already gone all the way there as it pertained to that piece.
So it started at NABJ, it started with writing that column and it just kept eating away at me because if Ms.
Knowles was willing to sacrifice her time and use her platform to try to get us to use our platforms to help the black community and help the queer community, then the very least I can do is meet her where she set the table at.
