And so when Kevin Rector and Kevin Merida from the LA Times, you know, talked to me about being part of this big project that we were doing about the century long fight for queer equality, you know, the first organization started in 1924, obviously it's 2024, you talked about November, but we're talking about all the Novembers between 1924 and 2024.
And, you know, my column was part of that.
And that's when I decided to take that next step and to combine both coming out publicly at the behest of Ms.
Knowles and trying to fight the good fight, but also contributing to this incredible project that I'm very, very proud of that the Los Angeles Times team was able to put together.
I didn't think it was a lie because actually it wasn't an onus for me to share it.
But what I thought it was, was stopping me from getting to a deeper truth.
And, you know, I'm someone who is obsessive about facts.
You know, a lot of my columns, most of my columns, I try to get all of my columns to be based in some historical fact and I take it all from there.
And so I try to dig for the fact even within the truth within myself.
And the truth is, is that I wasn't
not sharing this information for anything other than shame.
And so, you know, for me to characterize writing about HIV AIDS in terms of the Black community, in terms of gay Black men, and to not go take that next step and get past my own shame so that people may be able to look at the life I've been able to live,
And say, well, shit, if he's on ESPN, if he's on ABC, if he's, you know, he's been able to live a very public life and he seems to be thriving, then maybe this virus isn't as scary as I think it is.
And I should take my medications or I should at least get tested to see if I'm positive.
So that's the reason why I did it.
You know, it wasn't necessarily, you know, for people to look at me and my individual story, but rather to take the example of walking in the light.
And the fact is, is that that darkness that surrounds HIV AIDS, a lot of that came from a group of individuals who did not have any compassion for us.
And so it's up for us to have compassion for ourselves.
And that includes walking in that light.
Oh, man.
