So that's what happened during AIDS.
We politicized AIDS.
We filtered it through a morality lens instead of treating it like we would cancer or anything else, which is it is a virus.
That's the actual enemy.
So because we do that, Don,
we don't acknowledge the heroism in fighting the true enemy, because there's been this narrative set in place that the enemy are the people who were inflicted by the virus as opposed to the virus, or that the enemy was their sexual orientation or gender identity as opposed to the virus.
The way that the Reagan administration essentially allowed the Christian right to define how the American public should treat this virus, and then it was treated with fear and hatred as opposed to compassion and patriotism, that's the reason why it was allowed to fester in the way that it did.
