And because of that, Don, the people who fought that festering don't get acknowledged for being the true heroes that they were.

And that's the part that sickens me is that we as queer people don't really ride or die for our queer ancestors the way we used to because so many of them were lost in the AIDS epidemic and AIDS is a conversation we don't like to talk about, but we're leaving those heroes' names behind too and we shouldn't do that.

You know, I enjoyed writing that part because I was looking for heroes to put together.

And I wasn't looking for heroes, you know, to represent anything other than, you know, moments in U.S.

history that we just assume

You know, the narrative is through a heterosexual lens, right?

All the heroes of 9-11 were straight.

All the heroes of World War II were straight.

All the heroes of the civil rights movement were straight.

That's the way we sort of interpret it because that's the default, right?

That's the default.

And so I wanted to point out that we have always been there.

And it was one of the reasons why, you know, when I was writing a series of pieces, you know, just sort of criticizing some of the humor of Dave Chappelle, whose overall humor I love.

But, you know, you and I, you know, we've talked about this as well.

It's just that... It's complicated.

It's complicated.

But, you know, humor that characterizes us as not being there...

It's just historically, in fact, really inaccurate.

And it perpetuates a stereotype about queer people of color in particular that really is at the root of the reason why I wrote this piece to begin with.

Because the first person that we know of who died of HIV AIDS was a teenage black boy.
