The idea is that we will create this milieu that is so harsh and so demanding.

And one of the things that is not often spoken about is a lot of these places do the so-called gay conversion.

Like straight ink wasn't just straight from drugs.

Yeah.

Yeah, I mean, the thing is, they didn't advertise it that way.

But if you were gay, you were not going to be allowed to be gay.

If you were at all gender nonconforming, I mean, they would do things to humiliate you like dress boys in drag and that kind of thing.

But in Wasp, any girl who is at all unfeminine would be forced to dress very femme.

Any type of nonconformity would be broken.

And the gay conversion places were often based on streets model, just applied to gayness, not drugs.

It varies enormously.

It can be $5,000 a month.

It can be $30,000 a month.

It can be $60,000 a month.

Inflation is hitting here as well.

So when I first wrote Help At Any Cost, it was before the financial crisis.

At that point, a lot of people were mortgaging their homes in order to pay for this.

Since that was very easy to do, a lot of people got in a real lot of financial trouble or they spent the college fund on it.

But when the economy crashed, that source of financing went away and about half of the programs closed.
