Because until you know what you're dealing with, it is very difficult to treat it.
Because if you go to most residential centers, it is one size fits all.
You will get whatever their milieu is, regardless of what your actual problem is.
And
if at all possible, most things should be able to be dealt with on an outpatient basis.
Like if your kid's shooting up, if your kid is so thin that they need refeeding, if they are actively suicidal or homicidal, this is a different thing.
If you have a child who has been in 10 different foster homes and has an extremely complex history of trauma and mental illness, that is usually when...
you end up in situations where there's very little alternative for that.
What you need there is a place that is compassionate and that works to include the family and that works to keep the kid for as short time as possible and that keeps the kid connected to their community as much as possible.
But the vast majority of troubled teens have things like depression or anxiety.
These are much better treated at home.
And I mean, it breaks my heart, like kids have been sent to these places because their parent died and they were acting out.
and they were depressed.
In that circumstance, you need your loved ones around you.
Like the most healing thing for any trauma, which a lot of the kids who end up in these places are already traumatized and they get re-traumatized.
But the most healing thing for any trauma is increasing the number and quality of a person's relationships.
And that is what the good therapy should do.
Family therapy is often incredibly helpful for most teen conditions.
You want to try to get them in some kind of one-on-one counseling.
Like I would always recommend that first because if you put kids in like rehab for pot, they end up in with people who are doing opioids and cocaine.
