Why were they saying these things?
Because the only way to get out of straight was to be honest about how bad you were.
And if you weren't bad enough, you started making stuff up.
There's this real irony in that Nancy sees straight and she hears these stories from kids and she's like, we're losing an entire generation.
And most of the stories are made up.
Most of those kids wouldn't be able to tell one end of a needle from another.
They had never injected
Most of them were smoking pot.
Some of them had never even done drugs.
Like there's one guy who was notorious who sued because he got kidnapped into straight after being in college.
And he had red eyes because his contact lenses had he'd been in the pool with contact lenses.
And this was a sign that he was obviously addicted to weed.
Straight continued operating.
It served 50,000 American teenagers up until the early 90s.
You know, I mean, the thing, one of the reasons that AA can be so problematic for a lot of women is,
it has this whole idea that everything that happened to you was your fault and that you need to make amends even if you were abused.
There's this whole thing in the fourth step where you're supposed to like take responsibility for your part in having been abused.
And Straight really went to town with this stuff so that people, you know, who had been sexually abused were saying, well, how did you seduce the guy?
And like,
This kind of craziness was accepted as mainstream treatment for teenagers and people with addiction for many decades.
