So wilderness is a slightly different offshoot of the troubled teen industry.
They're coming out of BYU and a pretty Mormon milieu.

And so the idea is that, you know, nature can bring you closer to God and make you a better person.
The problem is the way they use nature is as a source of consequences.
You're just thrown into situations where you're not given appropriate equipment.
You're starving.
There was a profile, I think, that John Krakauer did of one of these programs in the 90s, and it was slightly positive, but it's like, oh, yeah, and the kids are eating, what was it, lizards?
Yeah, they were eating lizards.
Oh, my God.
And this was a good thing.
Eventually, Utah imposed...
a amount of calories that it is required to give children.
My feeling is if you have to regulate the amount of food that somebody is giving a kid, that person should not be in the child caring business.
Why are so many of these schools in Utah specifically?
Well, because that's where they started.
And Utah has a lot of wilderness and also Utah for a very long time.
Well, and still really very, very lax regulations.
