For many people, vultures are birds linked to death and decay.

Their disappearance across Africa has gone largely unnoticed.

But in one community in southeastern Nigeria, one man is fighting to protect these misunderstood birds.

I'm meeting Chukwemeka Igwe, a middle-aged man in Oke Tity.

Inside the sacred forest where an ancient shrine has become an unlikely refuge for vultures.

Locals knew him by an unusual name.

So people began to call me Ezeudene, which means the king of the Vulture.

Um and I cannot run away from it.

At the center of this forest is the shrine to Nguma, where sacrifices and its sacred tree provide safety and shelter for vultures.

Like I said, most of the times people do hunt

They're voters.

They will run to higher trees.

But when they run here at this shrine,

You found out that people fear

The environment where the shrine is.

No ever will ever happen here.

So nobody fights vultures that pitches here.

But there was a time when vultures were disappearing from Okid City.
