Across West Africa, conservationists say vultures face a growing crisis driven partly by demand for traditional medicine and spiritual practices.

Dr.

Stella Egwe, a conservation biologist with Nigerian Conservation Foundation, says the demand for vulture parts has fueled a wider trade.

Seven African vulture species are now threatened, with some listed as endangered or critically endangered, and some populations declining by up to ninety-eight percent.

Nigerian customs spokesperson Abdullahi Mewada says endangered species cannot legally cross borders under international laws.

He says seizures and prosecutions are helping to tackle the trade in Nigeria.
