Let's let's dive into some of the details then.
Maybe the f the first question that you pose, which we'll return to again later in the book, is about the relationship between metaphysics and ethics in particular.
the idea of a self.
Uh so you're arguing and what Shantideva is saying is that altruism is in some sense in our self-interest, but Buddhists famously argue, uh at least many of them were explicitly later on, right, that there there is no self.
So it seems like a difficult challenge for
for a virtue theorist to to even get this idea of uh of virtues uh off the ground.
How does this work for Shanti Deva?
How does he connect these this metaphysics and and this ethics?
So is the idea then that instead of talking about uh dispositions, we're talking about these these mental states, but that we could maybe have some kind of loose or conventional talk about dispositions as long as we uh don't forget that
that there's no uh persisting underlying bearer of things like dispositions in the sense of of properties.
Gotcha.
And so the first mental state that you take up in chapter two is generosity.
Uh and interestingly though, you you note Shantideva doesn't devote a chapter to generosity, even though this is one of the the important perfections as they're sometimes known or or virtues.
Uh so you draw on another text of Shantideva's that you translate as the uh training anthology to kind
of fill out the picture.
So um maybe first let's just talk about what is generosity for Shanti Deva?
Is there a particular Buddhist inflected uh conception of generosity that might be un unusual for broadly Western uh
listeners.
