It's like kokeshi, kokeshi, kokeshi.
yeah it's like everywhere like the telephone boxes have a kokeshi head on it okay like um all the street signs have kokeshi on it like um like the handrails all have kokeshi heads like like it's kokeshified to the point that it's actually like it's actually really funny like it's quite surreal and quirky and
The whole quirkiness kind of, like, appealed to me.
But during the tsunami, basically, like, because a lot of media were going to interview the tsunami refugees, they were inadvertently coming across Kokushi.
And so that created a kind of Kokushi boom.
And, um, in- and in parallel to that, like, like, all the journalists were going up and just, um, it just seemed, like, really, like, as someone, cause I do identify as, like, being half Tohoku, like, a Tohoku person, so, um, it felt, like, a bit exploitative after a while, like, it just, like, everyone was taking up and taking, like, tragedy photos, and I was like, how does this actually benefit anyone?
Like, I just felt like, like, after a while I was getting a bit sick of that narrative.
And, um, and like, of course everyone was super well-meaning when they're going up and taking those photos, but it just felt like, like there was, it was just being bombarded with these kinds of images, just kind of like, like, like this tragedy narrative.
And, of course, it is really tragic, but, like, it was also, like, what can we do to kind of help them?
And so I wanted to focus on something more positive and also in line with, like, you know, what I do normally.
And so I made that book as kind of like just a charity project.
Mm-hmm.
Um, but, um, thanks to the designer, like, um, this, this, um, this woman, Toby Fong, like it, the book was really cute.
Like it was a really nice design and it ended up in like really high end places like the MoMA and stuff like that.
Wow.
Yeah.
And, um, and then that book sold out really quickly and then I made another one and then.
And then I sold, and that one sold out.
And then I'm, then I sold the project to Tuttle, like, which is, you know, yeah, it's probably like Japan's like for Japan related stuff is probably the biggest.
Um, and it doesn't matter what I do.
