My parents were divorced when I was quite young.
He moved to California when I was 11.
And I barely saw him for eight years.
And...
You know, you'd come through London now and again, and I'd been out to California a couple of times, but I took a year off and I spent some proper time in California in my year off.
And when I got there, my stepmother, who was a pediatrician, she was really into cars.
In fact, the very last time I saw her, a couple of years before she passed away, she said to me, her biggest regret in life
was buying into a general practice with my dad in California instead of buying the Berlinetta Boxer of her dreams.
Because she was a very, very seriously into cars person.
She was the one who took me to the Old School Motor Show in 76 when I saw the Countach and the Lagonda and all the rest of it.
Anyway, she saw me sort of lounging about the house one too many times and said,
do you like sports?
And I said, I think sports are okay.
And she said, well, what sport do you like?
And I said, well, I like tennis.
So the next thing I knew, she enrolled me into something called Tennis Clinic, the country club.
And I'd gone from not playing very much tennis to being bought my first ever proper carbon fiber racket.
Was it a Prince?
