My name is Manisha Aswaran, filling in for the wonderful Ash London this morning.
And today I've got something a little bit different for you.
So one thing that has always fascinated me is just how unhinged awards shows can be.
From the unexpected speeches to the onstage feuds and the outfits that launched a thousand headlines, as well as those moments that are just so chaotic they instantly become pop culture history.
I feel like so many of those happen at awards shows.
So watching them back now feels like stepping into this absolute glorious mayhem of a walk down memory lane.
And that's what we're going to do today.
So whether you remember seeing these moments live and are ready to relive the chaos, or maybe you've only ever caught the viral clips after the fact, today we are doing a roundup of the most chaotic awards show moments of all time.
Now, it's simply not possible to start this off anywhere other than at the 2022 Oscars with one Will Smith.
Yep, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
That infamous moment where Will Smith walked out on stage and slapped Chris Rock after he joked about Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head, referring to her as G.I.
Jane.
It is pretty hard to forget him yelling this.
The whole thing went down while Chris Rock was presenting and the joke clearly hit close to home because Jada has spoken publicly about her alopecia.
Jada and Will have actually been separated since 2016, which is well before this incident happened, but they still aren't legally divorced.
Now, later that night, Will Smith actually went on to win Best Actor for King Richard.
A strong contrast to what had happened earlier.
There was so much back and forth on the internet about whether the whole thing was scripted or a stunt, but I think in hindsight, it's pretty clear to say that it wasn't staged and they wouldn't have decided to enact that before he went on to win Best Actor.
Okay, now to an awards show moment that really does live rent-free in my head, which took place at the 2015 MTV VMAs, when one Nicki Minaj took aim at Miley Cyrus during her acceptance speech for Best Hip Hop Video, calling her out for some comments that she'd made to the press.
