I appreciate you saying, do you change any minds?

I'm just going to rephrase this for a quick second.

And it's not to make some cute little skirt of the actual goal of these conversations.

I think step one is not changing people's minds.

I think step one is helping people understand why the person they are talking to believes what they believe.

I think if we can understand why you believe what you believe, I believe what I believe, get an understanding of my lived experience, my life, my background.

Where did my mom come from?

I think then what happens is it creates the social permission structure for people to actually be able to move past that immediate disagreement that happens.

And so what works is actually on a rapid scale is like people realize that the people that they disagree with actually have real justifications for why they believe what they believe.

I think it allows people to feel that the other side is not fundamentally evil.

And here's the biggest thing.

is people are exposed to the majority of people and they realize, oh my God, most people are actually on the side of bridging.

Most people are on the side of conversation.

Let's stop letting the loudest voices dominate the conversation.

Let's actually lead the counterculture.

So I think there's a social permission structure that gets created that's incredibly helpful and powerful.

Well, what that Yale poll shows, I think, is that there's a big generational shift happening.

My personal view on this is that I think what Democrats have lost is a sense of trust, that they care about the problems of people that feel that their livelihoods are on the line, which is odd because the history of the Democratic Party, from my understanding, is one that has flipped on that question.

Well, I actually use the word – I appreciate picking that up because I use the word my understanding very carefully.
