There's this growing enmity and...

increase in political violence happening across the country.

And my view on this is that I think mistrust comes because we fundamentally misunderstand each other's intentions.

I think that there's a deep sense that the people that you disagree with, at least this was the case with me, the people that we disagree with are fundamentally at odds with what we care about.

And there might be some truth to that.

We've always been divided.

That's not new.

I think what's new today is that there's this trend of affective polarization where the people that we sit across from are fundamentally our enemies.

And I think that mistrust is tragic because...

You have conversations with people between, let's say, New York City and Trenton, New Jersey.

You take that drive and you meet people in between.

You meet people in the urban centers.

They've not connected.

And the only way we form tropes of each other is through the media and through our echo chambers.

And I think that's really challenging right now.

Honestly, the questions you just asked me are the questions my mom asks me all the time.

She's like, I raised you.

You're calling me a boomer, but that's okay.

Technically, I'm not.
