A pooja room or a pooja space is a quiet, sacred area in the house, usually has an altar and there's pictures of gods, goddesses, there's lamps, there's incense.
Ah.
But how did these shrines end up in quite literally billions of people's homes around the world?
Well, to understand that we need to go back to the eighteen forties, to India.
You've got suspicion and fear in the air, and that tension, it eventually led to a mutiny.
But the trigger for this mutiny is really intriguing.
So at the time, there were reports that regiments of Indian soldiers serving in the British East India Company were given new rifles.
Now they weren't upset about the guns per se.
So a few things there, uh biting pork fat, this might all seem a little bit odd.
Back in these days, soldiers had to bite rifle cartridges in order to open them and pour the gunpowder in.
The rumour that was spreading was that these cartridges were greased with cow fat or pig lard as a form of lubricant, which is more than offensive to both Hindus and Muslims.
It was a very tangible breach of their religion.
Even having to touch this animal rendering would either condemn Muslims in the eyes of their god, uh
Would yank Hindus out of their caste in in this life and the next.
So I think you could imagine the sort of angst that these men were feeling.
So now you understand the context of the uprising.
During all of that, there's a kid, this young boy, and I want you to imagine him drawing on the walls of the family mansion.
So you you've got your young Ravivama drawing all over the home, and as a parent, I'm just grateful it's not my home.
