He's doing good.
He's getting commissions, he's winning competitions, reputation is growing.
And yet, painting portraits of people.
It doesn't quite scratch his itch.
Because he wants to paint something bigger
The thing is, it's not just the fact that Ravi Vama painted gods that made him famous.
It's about how he did it.
At the time, most images of the gods, I mean, well, firstly, you'd only see them in temples, but when you did, they were very 2D, very kind of flat.

Satisfied.
He wanted his paintings to have a bigger life, to reach more people across all levels of Indian society, not just the rich people.
So he turned to the printing
Yes, the man who painted the Hindu gods in a European style was able to be seen by people all around India thanks to a German printer.
And this is the part of the story that I love, right?
Because a century and a half on, you still see these images
Like if you live near an Indian shop or an Indian restaurant, in the next couple of days, do me a favor, pop your head in.
Because I guarantee you, you will see a Ravi Vama image.
And a big part of that is because this this German printing technician kind of popularizes this idea of printing Vama's artwork on just about everything.
I'm always fascinated by how an artist's interpretation becomes the image of a faith.
Things like the Sistine Chapel is an image of how we think about Christian religions.
