And today she is taking us through the incredible story of a race in 1907 with a car, which was daring for a bunch of reasons.
One, pretty new technology, but also really expensive technology.

I assume that means the public don't view it as like the way we see it now, which is that they're sort of like the dominant force.
I believe The Economist, which is still uh in existence today, once wrote Long Live the Horse in response to the automobiles.
But then, on the thirty first of January nineteen oh seven, a French newspaper decides to test that perception.
They publish this article.
Actually, no, they publish a challenge amid what can only be described as a climate of uncertainty in the budding years of the twentieth century.
So you can imagine, this race, this challenge, is a point of national pride for the French.

In this newspaper article, a proposal is made for a race driving from China to France.
So peaking is what we would call Beijing today.
And besides the nice alliteration of peaking to Paris, it does feel a bit arbitrary, like this idea of traveling from China to France.
But it turns out it wasn't as random as it sounds.
And so what is the route that the competitors take to get from Peking to Paris?
