Besides the difficult landscape they had to drive through, remember, this is a time when cars are in their infancy, so there are no petrol stations.
And petrol itself, it's not a particularly popular commodity.
In short, nightmare conditions.
The race was was meant to begin in June, but amid the scorn piled on the event, the newspaper actually decided to cancel the race.
