It boils over at a party.
Now, pachucos is, I guess, a slang term for young, working-class Mexican-Americans.
But that is not the end of the story.
A group is formed to launch an appeal.
They're called the Sleepy Lagoon Defence Group, and a very famous film director comes on board to champion their cause and raise legal funds.
And it seems there's a bit of a pattern amongst the young men who have been arrested.
It's funny because as I listen to you talk, all I can think about is the discourse we had in the last couple of years around like young people of color wearing hoodies, right?
Like you get policed for outfits and the color of your skin.
Like somehow those things get intertwined.
And it's like a lot of these conversations we have like have become very public in the wake of Black Lives Matter.
But actually there's a version of it.
Multiple versions of it that have played out through history.
After the party stabbing and the court case, a year goes by.
1943 rolls around and the tensions in LA, they are still very high.
This is a boundary crossing.
And the soldiers, they want to reinforce that boundary.
As you were talking, I was pulling up some pictures of the Zoot Suit riots.

Well, they're quite bizarre.
There's this one picture I'm looking at, and it's a young, looks like he's probably Mexican-American man, on the ground, cowered in a sort of fetal position, and he's in his underwear.
