This is, in fact, his own story.
Tim's grandmother, Gretel, and her sister, his great-aunt, they both lived in this apartment when Tim was growing up.
How much of this epic saga of war and art and escape were you aware of growing up?
Now, there's another twist to this story, that amazing artwork with this incredible history attached to it that you grew up with as a kid.
In the late 1960s, I understand your family wanted to give it as a donation, as a gift.
Is that right?
Now, today, it seems completely unimaginable to reject a donation of a Klimt painting.
But at the time, sort of the late 1960s, Klimt wasn't actually the global star he is now, at least certainly not in Australia.
I mean, that's the living definition of no one saw it coming, right?
Exactly.
A couple of years after the Art Gallery of New South Wales declined Kath's offer, Gretel had a stroke and her health started declining and Kath needed money to support her.
That's roughly 295,000 pounds today.
But here's the thing.
Over the years, the portrait of Hermine, it goes under the hammer and it sort of changes hands and homes until 1976 when it is bought by the National Gallery in London and becomes the only Klimt painting in a British public collection.
And as for Tim...
Well, he has visited his great-grandmother many times.
In fact, he's followed her around Europe as she goes on exhibition in cities from Paris all the way back home to Vienna.
If you visit the National Gallery of Victoria, the NGV, you'll find the Galea collection.
You see, when Hermina's daughters fled to Australia, they didn't just take the paintings.
They also took furniture, carpets, glass, silverwork, which was largely eventually acquired by the NGV.
