Well, around, let's say, 80 years before all of this is happening in Scotland, over in Germany, a book was published.
It was known as The Hammer of Witches, but its full title was... The Malice Maleficarium.
It was written by a German clergyman.
So this book, which was published in like the late 1400s, it spurred on and it sustained almost two centuries of witch hunting in Europe.
And would you guess who in Scotland was a big fan of the book?
But within the brevity was an issue.
You see, Mary's understanding of the word witch was very different to John Knox's understanding.
Queen Mary is backed into a corner.
She's holding firm on her religious tolerance.
She doesn't want to see Catholics harmed.
So her only option is to appease John Knox and sign the Witchcraft Act.
And she thinks this will only impact a handful of people, the so-called malevolent witches.
But she is mistaken.
Suddenly, hunting heretics is no longer a matter for the church alone.
No, it has now become a state matter.
And that changes everything.
Mary, Queen of Scots, was 21 years old when she signed that Anti-Witchcraft Act.
And she reigned until she was really only 25, when she was forced to abdicate in 1567.
the one played by Cate Blanchett in the movie, in case you're keeping track, she brought Mary in jail, believing that she was after the English throne.
Mary spends the next 20 years or so as a prisoner, and then, in her mid-40s, she's beheaded for treason.
