You are considering a 3.5 million investment for the 1001 Tabola project.
While I support preserving those units, we have to be honest.

While we fund isolated projects, the unified development ordinance this council passed has opened the floodgates for developers.
Instead of missing middle housing, we see an influx of luxury apartments and massive corporate-owned blocks that are out of reach for low-income neighbors.
Corporate landlords now own roughly 8% of single-family homes in Mecklenburg County,
and a 65% increase since 2019.
These institutional investors outbid our families and then hike rents beyond what local salaries can ever support.
Every time we ask for a rent-a-cat, we are told your hands are tied by a 1987 state law.
It is 2026.
But we know that this council can do what it feels, I'm sorry, we know what this council can do when it feels the pressure.
Last year, the Republican Party tried to use the tragic killing of Irena Zaruska as a political weapon.
They attacked this Democratic leadership and this mayor, claiming soft on crime policies were to blame.
But the citizens of Charlotte stood firm.
We saw through the attacks, we showed our support at the ballot box, and we voted Mayor Louse back into office.
In return, you worked with state leaders to pass Irena's law.
You proved that when the stakes are high, you can find the legislative energy to change the state-level rules.
