Well, Herbert Hoover, first of all, his father died when he was six years old.
He was a blacksmith in a small frontier town in 1873 in West Branch 74 in West Branch, Iowa.
His mother was a Quaker minister, which is a bit of a oxymoron because ministers didn't really exist in the Quaker tradition, except for that she was so powerful of a speaker and an evangelist of the word of God that
She was on a speaking circuit in sort of the central part of Iowa.
She was a Canadian.
Only David Frum would point that out.
And also Herbert Hoover's wife, Lou Henry Hoover, also is descendant from Canadian Quakers.
So there is a good representation of Canadians in the Hoover family.

I would expect nothing less.
The mother died when he was nine, leaving him orphaned after his father had died when he was six.
He was sent to live with actually Native American Osage tribes in Oklahoma for a period of time and then ultimately adopted by an estranged uncle in Oregon who raised him with an incredibly strong Quaker work ethic and not much TLC.
And Hoover stumbled upon an opportunity to
enroll in a new university that was started by Leland Stanford in California.
He was, in fact, the first student to matriculate into Stanford University because
He had to get there early for classes that would then qualify him to be a student there.
His formal education stopped when he was 14 and was essentially an autodidact until he got to Stanford.
He graduated with a degree in geology.
He met his wife, Lou Henry Hoover, there, who was the first woman to graduate with a degree in the hard sciences from Stanford.
but started in the middle of an economic downturn.
