And so he shoveled ore in a mine for $2 a week in the graveyard shift in the Sierra Nevadas until he had an opportunity to work for an English mining firm to explore properties in Western Australia.

In the outback, outback, outback, outside of Perth, he happened upon what ultimately became the most productive gold mine for the next 50 to 75 years in Western Australia.
It is currently still functioning.

really his innovations in terms of new technologies in mining and efficiencies that he created brought him under the sort of esteem of his bosses in London, which was the capital of mining finance.
And he cabled a new marriage proposal to his wife, Lou Henry Hoover, goes to California, marries her, and they take off to China, where they are then overseeing additional properties by their English investors in China, where they are caught in the beginning of the Boxer Rebellion.
Ultimately, they're part of a group of 137 foreigners who are kicked out of China.
They're the last of the foreign encampments.
They're rescued in a German mail boat and ultimately spend the next decade or so of their lives circumnavigating the globe on steamship, exploring and investing in mining properties all over Southeast Asia, Africa.
Russia, literally all over the world.
He ultimately leaves the firm, sets up his own consulting establishment, and publishes his first book called The Principles of Mining, which is still in print, and becomes this sort of technologist in this new age of
mining and materials and metallurgy, which really is the new tech of its day.
One other thing I would say about this is that he spends so much time on steamships going to these different countries, interacting with
the highest level of people in the countries, the leadership, the governance, the monarchies, and also the laborers and the people and everyone in between, he observes, really, this is the turn of the century, and he observes the tide of revolution sweeping the globe and begins to develop philosophies about what kinds of governments
are workable, don't work.
He has this practical experiment or observation of political science practically applied.
And he notices the wave of isms that are sweeping the globe, the Bolshevism, Marxism, Leninism, fascism, and begins to develop a theory about why his life has been possible as an orphan of no means from this frontier town in the West has put him in a place to
become a person of enormous influence and self-made wealth at the turn of a century.
